Nothing Had Changed

A man crouches by a balcony at night, observing his large brown dog chewing on a bone, with city lights visible in the background.

Gribbles didnโ€™t look up.

Didnโ€™t pause.

Didnโ€™t hesitate.

Just kept chewing.

Slow.

Steady.

Completely focused on the rawhide between his paws.

Like nothing had happened.

Like nothing could happen.

Jon stood there, watching him.

Waiting for something.

A reaction.

A sign.

Anything.

But there was nothing.

No fear.

No confusion.

No sense that the world had justโ€ฆ broken.

Just a dog.

Enjoying his treat.

Jon let out a slow breath.

Because if what he saw had been realโ€”

Wouldnโ€™t Gribbles know?

Wouldnโ€™t he feel it?

Wouldnโ€™t something be different?

But everything was the same.

The balcony.

The city.

The quiet hum of the night.

And Gribblesโ€”

Perfectly content.

Jon looked back at the empty doorway.

And for a momentโ€ฆ

He almost believed it hadnโ€™t happened at all.

  4. It’s an importing yarn.

A gribble — grub — is a tiny, wood-boring marine crustacean known for digging, burrowing into and feeding, destroying submerged plants, timber; allegorising a soul and what they bury but to be emerged in days to come.

    1. Thank you! I didn’t know that!
