It Was Never Just the Contract

A man sitting on the floor beside a dog in a dimly lit living room, with tall buildings visible through the window.

Jon used to think the contract was the moment everything changed.

The decision.
The turning point.
The beginning.

But standing in his apartment, watching Gribbles waddle toward him like nothing in the world had shiftedโ€”

He realized something.

This didnโ€™t start today.

It didnโ€™t start with Atriya.

It didnโ€™t start with the contract.

It started long before that.

In every moment he chose something that didnโ€™t make sense.

The old rescue dog no one wanted.

The quiet rejection of everything he was supposed to want.

The constant pull toward somethingโ€ฆ different.

At the time, none of it felt important.

Just small decisions.

Instincts.

Preferences he couldnโ€™t explain.

But nowโ€”

They didnโ€™t feel random.

They felt connected.

Like pieces of something he hadnโ€™t seen yet.

Jon glanced down at Gribbles, who was now happily chewing like nothing in existence mattered beyond that moment.

โ€œYeah,โ€ he muttered.

Same urge.

Different scale.

Because whatever made him choose that dogโ€ฆ

Was the same thing that made him sign the contract.

And if that was trueโ€”

Then this wasnโ€™t an accident.
