She Was Afraid of Everything. Until She Wasn’t.

“You know, when I was younger…

I was afraid of everything.”

Atriya laughed.

“Really? You?”

“It’s the truth.”

Verus didn’t look embarrassed.

Didn’t soften it.

Didn’t try to make it sound better than it was.

“I used to lie in bed and shake.

Every night.

There was something in the room with me.”

Not a nightmare.

Not imagination.

Something that moved.

Something that breathed.

Something that watched.

“I could hear it.

Heavy.

Wet.

Sometimes I’d see its eye…

yellow.

Sick-looking.”

Most people would dismiss it.

Call it fear.
Call it childhood.
Call it nothing.

But she didn’t.

She endured it.

Night after night.

Until one night—

she decided it would end.

“I was either going to get rid of it…

or kill myself.”

No hesitation.

No drama.

Just a decision.

So she ran at it.

Crying.
Terrified.
Breaking—

and she shoved it.

Turned on the light.

And saw the truth.

Not a monster.

Not something powerful.

Just…

a small, ancient thing.

Pathetic.

Shrinking from the light.

And in that moment—

her fear vanished.

  21. Man, I used to be terrified of the dark since I would be yanked out of sleep and see these black orbs floating around sometimes. I saw ‘Spirited Away’ and the soot sprites reminded me of them and that caused my fear to disappear lol
    Awesome writing!

    1. I can empathize–I had a castle Grayskull toy on top of a shelf that was cool to play with, but when I turned the lights off to go to sleep, that thing scared the bejesus out of me, lol!

      1. I had to look that toy up and I can totally see that looking terrifying at night, with all the shadows lol.

      2. Yeah big ol’ skulls don’t make the best bedtime decor haha

  22. Hi! I wanted to let you know I tagged you for the Sunshine Blogger Award!💜

  23. For some reason this reminds me of the Henry S Whitehead story “The Passing of a God”. Good stuff! Nice, punchy pulp writing.

    1. Thank you!

  24. Such a powerful piece. I love how you show that fear can feel monstrous until the moment we finally turn and face it.
Beautifully written. That shift from terror to clarity was so vivid, and the ending leaves such a strong impression.
This was gripping and deeply symbolic. Sometimes the things that haunt us lose all their power the second we drag them into the light.
