The Only Thing That Felt Real

A man gently pets a small dog with a blind eye while sitting on a couch in a cozy, dimly lit living room. A coffee mug and stacked notebooks are placed on a wooden table.

Gribbles didnโ€™t care who Jon was supposed to be.

He didnโ€™t care about:

Degrees.
Careers.
Expectations.

He didnโ€™t care if Jon figured his life out.

Or didnโ€™t.

He just cared that Jon came home.

Tail wagging.

Eyes brightโ€”wellโ€ฆ one of them.

That was enough.

Jon crouched down, scratching behind his ears as Gribbles leaned into him like the world outside didnโ€™t exist.

And for a momentโ€”

It didnโ€™t.

No pressure.

No future.

No expectations waiting to be lived up to.

Just this.

A dog who didnโ€™t need him to be anything other than what he already was.

In a world where everything felt conditionalโ€ฆ

That felt rare.

It felt real.

Jon exhaled slowly, his hand resting on Gribblesโ€™ back as the dog settled in, content in a way Jon had never quite figured out how to be.

And maybe that was the difference.

Gribbles didnโ€™t question anything.

Didnโ€™t search for something more.

Didnโ€™t feel like he was missing something.

He just existed.

And somehowโ€”

That was enough.

Jon wasnโ€™t sure if that made him wiseโ€ฆ

Or just unaware.

But either wayโ€”

It was the closest thing to peace he knew.

  1. I love this and Chapter One! You have a great voice.

    1. Thank you!

  2. Iโ€™m loving the connection between Jon and his dog; wonderful.

  3. Thanks very much for connecting with my – as yet unmarketed – site.

    I sense a kindred spirit.

The highlight of my English Lit degree was my dissertation, using Asimov, Philip K Dick, and William Gibson to focus on ideas around reality, humanity, and the relationship between AI and human intelligence.

This has such interesting echoes of ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ – but with the added dimension of Gribbles’ point of view!

    1. Thank you! I’m flattered you mention my stuff and Bladerunner in the same sentence!

  4. Very nice. I like how calm the scene is, and I love the emotion between Jon and Gribbles.

  5. Dear God the image alone has me wanting to wrap that pup up in my lap and just love on him. Puts me in mind of my 19 year old elder statesman, Gustav. One of the two black cats I have. <3

    1. I love older animals. They’re masters of relaxation ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. True. My younger cat Sonny is a chaos commando.

  6. Nice. I especially liked the feeling from the last line. Like a philosophical post script.
