The Real Torture Happened Out of Sight

A cloaked figure, shrouded in darkness, stands prominently in the foreground, casting a magical aura from their outstretched hand. In the background, armored knights march forward with a menacing presence, while a dark, gothic castle looms ominously under a stormy sky.

The soldiers frightened Jon immediately.

Towering white armor.

Weapons that looked ceremonial and brutal at the same time.

The kind of presence that makes your body tense before your mind understands why.

But the deeper Jonโ€™s visions went into Dragon Worldโ€”

the more he realized the soldiers werenโ€™t the worst part.

There were others.

Figures dressed in dark robes that moved differently from everyone else.

Calm.

Patient.

Watching.

The soldiers brought violence.

The robed figures brought suffering.

Jon overheard whispers about them during the flashes between worlds.

Pain Wizards.

Not executioners.

Not battlefield fighters.

Something worse.

People whose entire purpose revolved around extracting pain from others.

Not just physically.

Emotionally.

Mentally.

Spiritually.

And somehow that disturbed Jon far more than the monsters.

Because monsters at least behave like monsters.

But cruelty disguised as orderโ€”

that felt human.

Dragon World was no longer beginning to feel like an adventure.

It was beginning to feel real.

And real worlds always contain darkness.

  1. Isn’t it funny … We fear losing humanity more than we fear death – even though we’d be hard pressed to describe our humanity and perhaps call it a soul. We understand the dark Id, though; we have it within us. But we try to keep it bottled up because letting it out would turn us into … well … into Servants of Pain.

  2. I can feel that environment so clearly through Jonโ€™s clear voice.
