He Was Living the Right Life… And It Felt Completely Wrong

At first, it felt like things mattered.

Like there was purpose.

Like something bigger was happening.

And then…

Everything went back to normal.

Not the world.

The people.

Back to routines.
Back to expectations.
Back to grinding toward something no one could actually explain.

That’s when the question showed up.

The one that doesn’t go away once you hear it.

What’s it all for?

Jon couldn’t shake it.

Not in lectures.
Not scrolling through distractions.
Not pretending to care about things that felt… empty.

He wasn’t broken.

He wasn’t ungrateful.

He knew he had a good life.

A clear path.

A future most people would accept without question.

And that was the problem.

Because it felt like a script.

One he didn’t remember agreeing to.

College.
Career.
Routine.
Repeat.

He could see it unfolding.

And something in him resisted.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just a quiet, persistent feeling:

👉 this isn’t it

Most people feel it.

For a moment.

Then they move on.

Jon didn’t.

He kept pushing.

Kept questioning.

Kept pulling at something just beneath the surface of everything.

And every now and then…

Someone would recognize it.

A look.

A pause.

A flicker of something real behind their eyes.

Like they felt it too.

But didn’t want to admit it.

Jon did.

And that’s what made him different.

Not stronger.

Not smarter.

Just unwilling to pretend.

  1. Makes me think….
Maybe we’re all waiting for something extraordinary to happen in our ordinary lives. But yes, like Jon, not all have the courage to act upon that desire, even when the opportunity presents itself.

    1. Indeed! I wrote it deliberately that way because I felt it was relatable.

  2. I think we all feel like Jon at some point in our lives, but instead of trying to get out of the rut, many of us settle in deeper and let the dreams pass us by.

    1. I agree! I feel, however, there is always hope, even if it seems completely out of logical reach

  3. “What’s it all for?”
I ask myself the same question sometimes.
Why are we acting in a script we were forced to play? And what happens if we stop? Would we finally find the answer to the “what” question?

I feel like there is an answer somewhere… I just can’t fully grasp it yet.

    1. I have been there before, and I totally relate!

  4. Great piece 👍🏽

  5. Impactful. Terse. Well-written. Great concept about the search for meaning we all have.
