On my creative process…

As frustrating as it might sound, I believe intuition and feelings have the final say in what I write and publish. The alternative is to ping-pong back and forth between established standards and technical theories on what makes something “good.” Sure, I might be able to construct a checklist based on technicalities that proclaims something is “good,” but that wouldn’t guarantee it would be received well and/or be successful–that’s evidenced by box office bombs that were supposedly the next sure thing, as well as the surprise hits that come from no-name artists.

The one thing I can be sure of is whether it feels right to me. The other stuff might play a role in determining that, but at the end of the day, it will always be about how it feels to me, and whether I feel like I did the best that I could. As far as making hits, I think that’s too unique a process to be worth fussing over. On a related note, Quentin Tarantino was asked by a fan how to become successful. His answer was, “Make Reservoir Dogs. That’s what I did.”
